What to Expect for a Professional Dental Cleaning

A regular dental checkup is recommended at least twice a year to maintain a healthy oral cavity. Apart from brushing and flossing your teeth at home, you should visit your dentist every six months to check if your teeth and gums are healthy. Part of the routine dental checkup is a professional dental cleaning. At Quarry Park Dental we ensure that our patients receive professional dental cleaning during their check-ups!

Our Professional Dental Cleaning is done by one of our Registered Dental Hygienists. Here’s what you can expect in a professional cleaning in our dental office:

  1. Physical Examination of Your Oral Cavity: A small mirror is used to assess your teeth and gums for any dental problems. Your dental hygienist will tell your dentist if an oral problem exists and will ask permission if they can proceed with the dental cleaning.
  2. Removing Tartar and Plaque: Plaque and tartar are removed using a scaler. Plaque is a sticky invisible form that forms on your teeth. Regular brushing can prevent plaque formation. Tartar, on the other hand, is a form of a hardened dental plaque that has been left on your tooth for quite some time. Only a professional dental cleaning can remove tartar.
  3. Teeth Polishing: The removal of stains and plaque that is not removed during scaling and regular tooth brushing is done during polishing. The use of abrasive toothpaste and expert flossing is usually part of this process. Polishing using an abrasive toothpaste can be done at least twice a year.
  4. Rinsing and Fluoride Application: Your dental hygienist will provide you with a liquid fluoride to rinse your teeth. Fluoride treatment is the last part of the process of your professional teeth cleaning.
