Now that you have completed a dental implant surgery, what happens next? Learning what to expect after a dental implant surgery is essential to help patients cope with what’s going to happen after the procedure. At Quarry Park Dental, we make sure that our patients are well informed of what to expect after dental implant surgery.
The day after surgery, whether you had to go through one stage or multiple stages of the dental implant procedure, you may experience symptoms, such as swelling of your face and gums, pain at the implant site, minor bleeding and bruising of your gums and skin. Prescribed pain medication can help alleviate the pain and discomfort brought on by the surgery.
If swelling or pain gets worse days after surgery, you need to consult with your oral surgeon. Antibiotics may also be prescribed after the surgical procedure. Follow up visits are required to monitor your teeth, gums, and implant. A periodontist will closely work with you and your dentist to help with your dental implant care plan. A home oral care plan is also instructed to ensure that your implant is clean and healthy.
During the healing process, you will be instructed to adhere to a soft diet, cold food, and lukewarm soups. You will be given a temporary crown, denture or bridge while waiting for your bone and implant fixture to grow together. It will take two to six months before an artificial tooth or crown is placed on top of your implant.
